President Mahinda Rajapaksa said today that the country achieved the current development status because the present government, unlike its predecessors, did not sell government institutions.

Certain previous governments systematically destroyed government institutions complaining that the government cannot do profitable business and later sold them to their favorites low-priced.

Addressing the gathering, the President said that the two institutions were able to record a profit above 1.4 billion rupees last year.

20% of the profit was paid as incentives and bonuses to workers and farmers.

President Rajapaksa was addressing a ceremony to distribute bonuses and incentives to workers of Sevenagala and Pelawatta sugar corporations which were taken over by the government in 2011.
