Indian Foreign Secretary Sujatha Singh stressed that United Nation has no mandate to hold an investigation over the human rights in Sri Lanka.

Appearing on a CNN and IBN television program she said that the UN Human Rights Council was set up to assist internal mechanisms and not to interfere in the administration of member countries.

Then the television anchor asked Indian Foreign Secretary Sujatha Singh why India abstained from voting when the American backed resolution against Sri Lanka was taken in the UN Human Rights Council sessions.

Explaining India’s reason to abstain from voting, she said that neither an international organization nor a foreign country can hold an inquiry by force against another sovereign country.
