Certain changes in the environment are witnessed along with the Sinhala and Tamil New Year.

Environmentalists point out that the sound of the New Year Cuckoo commonly known as Kohaa has increased this year.

Environmentalist Jagath Gunawardana stated that since there was more dry weather and even moonlight, the sound of the Kohaa was more this year.

Meanwhile, there is a decrease in the number of Erabadu flowers which is a symbol of the Sinhala and Tamil New Year.

This was due to the felling of erabadu trees.
