Steps have been taken to preserve the Kalpitiya coral reef which is the biggest Coral reef in Sri lanka.

Kalpitiya Coral reef is 306 kilometres in length and there are 122 varieties of corals and 400 varieties of fish.

The Coral reef was named as a sanctuary in 1992 but due to many adverse activities such as using illegal fishing gear and anchoring fishing boats, the corals were gradually being destroyed.

As a result of it the Kalpitiya Divisional secretariat together with the wild life department has taken steps to preserve the coral reef.
