The entire nation is geared to greet the New Year which marks the transit of the sun from the house of Meena Rashiya to the house of the Mesha Rashiya.

This is a reminder for all those who are geared to make the New Year more meaningful by adhering to the auspicious times for the traditional New Year.

The Punya kalaya began at 1.13 p.m. today and will last until 2.01 pm..

Therefore everyone should cease work during this period and engage in religious observances.

The New Year dawned at 7.37 am.

The most suitable time to light the hearth is at 10.17 a.m. attired in white facing the South and cook milk rice mixed with ghee and jaggery and a sweetmeat with sesame.

The auspicious time for partaking of meals for the New Year after starting work and holding transactions is at 11.05 a.m.

Bak full moon poya day falls today as well.

According to our correspondents a large number of devotees have gathered at Temple of the tooth relic, Katharagama Kiri Vehera , Jaya Sri Maha bodiya and other religious sites to obtain blessings.
