The ceremony of oil anointing for the Sinhala and Hindu New Year was held at the auspicious time of 11.16 this morning.

The New Year time prescription recommended a mixture of oil and extract of Margosa leaves for anointing this year.

The recommended color for attire was green while the direction recommended was the South.

It also recommended using Margosa leaves overhead and Kolon leaves under the feet of those who smear the mixture before they have the first bath for the New Year.

The State Oil Anointing ceremony this year was held at the Kossinnna Ancient Temple in Ganemulla and President Mahinda Rajapaksa was anointed at the auspicious time amid the chanting of pirith.

Later President Rajapaksa smeared oil mixture on an elephant.

The anointing ceremony organized by Hiru TV was held with the patronage of first lady Shiranthi Rajapaksa at the Hunupitiya Gangaramaya.

A large crowd gathered at the Gangaramaya Temple for the auspicious anointing ceremony this morning.

Along with the main ceremony in Ganemulla, oil anointing ceremonies were also held in the Kataragama Kiri Vehera premises, at the Temple of the Tooth in Kandy and opposite the Jaya Sri Maha Bodhi in Anuradhapura this morning.

Our correspondents reported that similar ceremonies of oil anointing for the New Year were held at many Buddhist temples throughout the country today.

Meanwhile nearly 100 elephants at the Pinnawala Orphanage were also anointed at the auspicious time today with the participation of Sabaragamuwa Chief Minister Mahipala Herath.

A table of elephant fodder made of various trees had been laid to feed the elephants after the smearing.

Meanwhile the auspicious time to leave for work for the first time this year is scheduled at 6.16 tomorrow morning.

The ceremony of oil anointing for the Sinhala and Hindu New Year was held at the auspicious time of 11.16 this morning.

The New Year time prescription recommended smearing a mixture of oil and extract of Margosa leaves while dressing in green and facing the south.

It also recommends using Margosa leaves overhead and Kolon leaves under the feet of those who smear the mixture before they have the first bath for the New Year.

The State Oil Anointing ceremony this year was held at the Kossinnna Ancient Temple in Ganemulla, and President Mahinda Rajapaksa was anointed at the auspicious time amid chanting of pirith.

Western Provincial Chief Minister Prasanna Ranatunga, North Central Provincial Chief Minister S.M. Ranjith Deputy Ministers Sarana Gunawardana and Pandu Bandaranayake also participated.

Later President Rajapaksa had a conversation with the people gathered in the temple before he smeared oil mixture on an elephant.

The auspicious time to leave for work for the first time this year is scheduled at 6.16 tomorrow morning.

Preparing of Nanu or the herbal application for the custom, took place in several areas across the country.

Meanwhile, the Ministry of Indigenous Medicine stated that the National Oil Anointing Ceremony this year will be held at the Kossinna Raja Maha Viharaya in Gampaha under the patronage of President Mahinda Rajapaksa.
