Hand tractor with 21 passengers topples into a canal; 10 dead including 4 children : Video
Ten persons were killed at Aluth Oya in Aralaganwila, Polonnaruwa after a hand tractor in which 21 persons were traveling fell into an irrigation canal this afternoon.
Police said that another five persons who were injured in the accident are receiving treatment in Aralaganwila and Dehiaththakandiya hospitals.
Members of three families had been traveling in the ill fated hand tractor from Nikawathalanda in Aralaganwila to visit their relatives in Sevanapitiya, Welikanda for the New Year.
Some of the victims were from Bandaragama in Horana.
Police Media Spokesman SSP Ajith Rohana said that among the dead were four children.
Police also said that the driver had lost control of the hand tractor which was over loaded at the time of the accident.
The driver was also killed in the accident.
Director of the Aralaganwila hospital Yasitha Bollegala said that all ten persons would have drowned to death.
Meanwhile two Navy Personnel were killed and four others injured when their jeep overturned at Poduwakattu on the Trincomalee Pulmuddai road this afternoon.
The two deceased were attached to the Kuchchaweli Navy camp, while the four injured were attached to the Trincomalee Navy base.
The injured are currently receiving treatment in ICU of the Trincomalee Hospital.
