Two men in full faced helmets on a motorcycle robbed a private bank in Rawathawatta, Moratuwa this afternoon.
Another similar robbery was thwarted when security officers on duty opened fire as two robbers attempted to enter the private bank in Kirullapone this afternoon.
The bullet only hit a glass pane in the building and the security officer was injured due to a fragment of broken glass.
The security officer is currently receiving treatment at the Kalubovila hospital.
Meanwhile the robbers fled the scene using another motorcycle.
SSP Ajith Rohana said that 14 private banks, financial institutions and jewellery shops were robbed in Colombo and its suburbs during the last two months.

According to the latest reports, the private bank in Rawatawatta, Moratuwa lost Rs. 777,000 following the bank robbery this afternoon.
Police investigations revealed that two armed persons wearing masks arrived in a motorbike, robbed the private bank and fled.
Meanwhile, the security officer who thwarted the bank robbery in Kirulapona was admitted to Kalubowila Hospital owing to injuries.
Two armed persons wearing masks arrived at the private bank in Kirulapona at 1.50pm today, and attempted to rob the bank. When the security officer opened fire at them using his official firearm, a piece of broken glass from a window hit him causing injuries.
Police media spokesman’s office stated that the suspects fled the scene after changing bikes.
