Police say that they are searching whether the father who threw his children to the Nilvala River also jumped to the same river.
A senior Police Officer in Matara said that Navy divers are scouring Nilvala River for the suspected victim as police suspect the man could have jumped to the river after throwing his children.
Police arrested the mother of two little children who were thrown off to Nilvala River by their father yesterday.
Some pedestrians on the Mahanama Bridge in Matara noticed that a man was fleeing after throwing two children into the river.
Later the onlookers have informed the incident to the officers on duty at a nearby Army sentry.
Several soldiers acted in a split second, jumped into the river and saved the four-year old girl and the two-year old boy.
The suspect is a resident of Rathmale area in Matara and police has deployed a special team to arrest the absconding father of the victims.
Meanwhile the Army Commander has decided to award the soldiers who braved Nilvala waters to save the two children.
