The World Health Organization says that the Middle East respiratory syndrome corona-virus also known as MERS has a risk of reaching other countries as well.

This particular strain of coronavirus has not been previously identified in humans.

The number of cases who acquired the infection in the community has also increased since mid‐March.

We inquired from the Health Ministry regarding the steps taken to prevent an outbreak in Sri Lanka considering the fact that there are thousands of Sri Lankan travelling to and from Saudi Arabia.

A Spokesperson at the Ministry stated that they would carry out random checks on those arriving in the country with any illness and samples from them will be checked for the virus.

However the spokesperson stated that Sri Lankans should not generate any fear regarding this as there was no cause for alarm.
