Several main political parties are preparing to commemorate the 125th International Workers’ Day which falls today.

The Police media spokesman’s office stated that 17 May Day rallies and 15 May Day processions are expected to parade the streets today.

Under the theme “Protect Motherland and defend independence” the UPFA May Day rally will be held at Campbell grounds from 3pm onwards under the patronage of President Mahinda Rajapaksa.

The UNP will hold their May Day rally in Ampara under the theme ‘Reasonable Pay and a government to protect workers’ rights’.

The rally will be held under the patronage of the party’s Acting Leader Karu Jayasuriya at Ground Junction on the Kalmunai Road at 1pm.

The JVP will hold their May Day rally under the theme ‘Red May Rally to empower people and the voice of people”.

The May Day procession of the JVP will commence from Dehiwala S. De S. Jayasinghe grounds and arrive at Colombo B.R.C. grounds, where the party’s rally is due to commence.

In addition, the May Day rally of the Frontline Socialist Party will be held at 3pm tomorrow at the Nawagam-pura grounds in Orugodawatta.

Moreover, the United Socialist Party, People’s United Front, Nawa Sama Samaja Party, Samajawadi Janatha Peramuna, Samajawadi Samanatha Party, Democratic People’s Front and Democratic Party have also organized May Day rallies.

Several Trade unions have also organized May Day processions.

17 Rallies and 15 processions in Colombo on May Day tomorrow

Several main political parties are preparing to commemorate the 125th International Workers’ Day which falls tomorrow.

The Police media spokesman’s office stated that 17 May Day rallies and 15 May Day processions are expected to parade the streets tomorrow.

Under the theme “Protect Motherland and defend independence” the UPFA May Day rally will be held at Campbell grounds from 3pm onwards under the patronage of President Mahinda Rajapaksa.

A media briefing was convened by the UPFA in Colombo today concerning May Day rallies and SLFP General Secretary Minister Maithripala Sirisena stated that they will pass 6 key proposals.

The UNP will hold their May Day rally in Ampara under the theme ‘Reasonable Pay and a government to protect workers’ rights’.

The rally will be held under the patronage of the party’s Acting Leader Karu Jayasuriya at Ground Junction on the Kalmunai Road at 1pm.

The JVP will hold their May Day rally under the theme ‘Red May Rally to empower people and the voice of people”.

Police Media spokesman SSP Ajith Rohana stated that a special traffic plan will be implemented within Colombo due to May day rallies and processions.

Therefore, the traffic on Nelum Pokuna Mawatha, Baseline Road, Borella, Maradana and Colpetty as well as the surrounding routes will be restricted.

In addition, the Police Headquarters stated that there will be a traffic jam along  Badulla – Colombo main road due to Ceylon Workers’ Congress which will be held at the city centre of Bandarawela at 10am.

The police request the public to use alternative routes during this period.

Meanwhile, about 5082 police officers have been deployed for May Day duties.
