Police suspect a personal dispute was behind the rigging of a hand torch which exploded injuring three family members in Bambara-Deniya, Balangoda this morning.
The Police Media Spokesman’s Office stated that the torch was believed to be loaded with explosives and set to burst when it was switched on.
A 51-year-old father, 14-year-old son and 24-year-old daughter were injured in the explosion.
Early this morning, the son who had found a battery powered domestic hand torch lying at the compound had taken it to his father who was in the kitchen.
Later the torch exploded when it was switched on by the father injuring him, his son and his daughter.
The victims were rushed to the Balangoda hospital immediately and were later transferred to the Ratnapura teaching hospital where an amputation surgery was performed on the father’s arm.
Police Media Spokesman SSP Ajith Rohana said police suspect a family dispute to be the motive behind this explosion but nobody has been arrested so far.

Three persons were critically injured when a battery powered torch exploded in a house of Bambara-Deniya at Meda Kanda in Balangoda this morning.
The victims, father, son and daughter were rushed to Balangoda hospital after the explosion and later they were transferred to Ratnapura teaching hospital as the condition of the victims turned critical.
The son who found a battery powered domestic torch lying on the compound has brought it in, and the torch exploded as it was switched on by the father.
Police suspect a family rival has loaded some explosives inside the torch and left it on the compound to ensnare the victims in order to take revenge.
