The United States says it is committed to working with the Sri Lankan government and the people to strengthen democracy despite being disappointed by certain failures to take adequate steps to support accountability and reconciliation.

Assistant Secretary, Bureau of South and Central Asian Affairs Nisha Desai Biswal said Sri Lanka is still undergoing a fragile transition although the war ended in 2009.

Biswal made this remark to the House Foreign Affairs Committee's Subcommittee on Asia and the Pacific, at a hearing to assess the U.S. foreign assistance priorities in South Asia.
