Heavy rains to continue: Landslide warning extended

The Meteorology department states that Showers or thundershowers will develop over most parts of the island particularly during the afternoon and night.

Heavy falls about 100 mili meters are expected at some places.

Under the above condition showers or thundershowers can be expected at some places during the morning too.

Duty meteorologist Jeewan Karunarathna said There may be temporary localized strong winds during thundershowers.

Due to heavy showers experienced in Puthlam – Navagaththegama area 90 families were distressed.

Meanwhile a group of local and foreign tourists who were trapped in the Minneriya reserve last evening were rescued with the assistance of the residents and the Disaster Management unit.

4 foreigners and 44 locals were among those trapped who had visited the park in 10 jeeps as the Kiri Oya overflowed.

Meanwhile, head of the landslide division of National Building and Research institute R. M. S. Bandara stated that landslide warning issued to 4 districts have been extended and requested the public to be extremely vigilant.
