The National Heritage Ministry has implemented a special programme for protecting archaeologically important sites and  ruins.

Minister Jagat Baalasooriya told our news team that information kept coming with regard to treasure thieves destroying archaeologically important locations.

The Minister said that due to this it had been decided to set up archaeological councils at village level.

The aim of this is to protect the archaeological sites in villages through the archaeological councils.

Archaeology Minister Jagat Baalasooriya said further that under this programme instruction had been given to ring the Buddhist Temple bells according to the old system if  treasure thieves  take steps to carry out excavations illegally at a archaeological site.
