Districts prone to landslides increase to 5 : Video
The number of districts prone to landslides has risen to 5 due to the prevailing inclement weather in the country.
National Geological Research and Mining Bureau Director R.M.S. Bandara said that the districts of Nuwara Eliya, Kegalle, Badulla, Kandy and Kalutara are now prone to landslides.
The Irrigation Department stated that the spill level of 72 reservoirs has been increased by 41%.
Director of the Water Management Unit of the department Janaki Meegastenna said that spill gates of several reservoirs have already been opened.
Meanwhile a house in Meeriya-Bedda, Passara was damaged after a soil embankment and a rock fell on it last night.
Four family members in Kinniya, Trincomalee were hospitalized after being struck by lightning.
Assistant Director of National Disaster Management Center Pradeep Kodippili further described the prevailing disaster situation.
Meanwhile the Meteorology Department stated that many areas of the island could experience thunder storms during the next 38 hours.
Meteorologist on duty Jeevan Karunarathna said certain areas could receive a rainfall above 150 millimeters.
