The police are suspecting that the individuals who abducted two police constables and murdered one of them are the same individuals who robbed a filling station in Narammala the day prior to the murder.

A police team involved in the investigation has checked the CCTV cameras in the filling station.

However, on the day of the robbery the CCTV cameras of the filling station had not been active, yet eye witnesses had told the police that the robbery was carried out by 4 individuals who had covered their faces.

Speaking to our news team a high ranking officer in the CID who is involved in the investigation stated that the robbery was carried out at approximately 11pm on the 5th of this month and that the robbers had stolen approximately 37 thousand rupees.

The two police constables who were on traffic duty at the Kurunegala – Gattuwana junction were abducted the very next day early in the morning and one of them shot and killed near the Ranawana region near the Badagamuwa forest reserve.

However, one of the police constables, Ajith Weerasuriya, managed to flee the scene and save himself and is currently receiving treatment at the Kurunegala Teaching Hospital.

In the statement given to the police by the constable it was stated that there were 4 individuals who had covered their faces in the vehicle that was used to transport him.

The high ranking official of the CID further stated that due to this the investigation is also focusing on whether the suspects of the Narammala robbery are the same perpetrators of the abduction and murder.

The final rites of the deceased police constable Sampath Sisira Bandara is scheduled to be held at his hometown in Ibbagamuwa at the Aragama Public Cemetery this afternoon.

Meanwhile, our regional correspondent stated that the Senior DIG in charge of the North Western Province Jagath Abeysiri Gunawardena had paid his last respects to the body of the deceased constable.
