President Mahinda Rajapaksa says that the government is taking steps to empower northern youth who had lost certain rights due to terrorism in the past.
Participating in a Twitter discussion, President Rajapaksa said that northern students excelled the GCE O/ Level examination last year due to the government’s youth empowering program in the province.
During the International Youth Forum’s inaugural ceremony in Hambantota a few days ago, the President invited participants to his Twitter discussion.
Accordingly, the discussion was held this afternoon.
Most of the questions posed for the President were regarding youth education, employment and empowering of women.
During the Twitter discussion, President Rajapaksa said the government has drawn its attention to increase the cash allowance given to recipients of the Mahapola scholarship.
He tweeted that 10% of university students are in dire need of some assistance.
He also said that the government generally takes steps to productively improve education in the country including upgrading 1000 schools to a fully fledged level.
When asked whether the government has any plans to ban social media websites such as Facebook and Twitter he said that his sons will be the first to raise objections if such a move is initiated.
He said that over 300,000 fans have “Liked” him on Facebook and he had over 25,000 followers on Twitter and so he would not ban social media websites in the country.
