Supreme Court verdict with regard to Pictorial warning on Cigarette Packets today
The Supreme court verdict on the case filed against the gazette notification requiring the inclusion of a pictorial warning extending to 80 per cent of the cigarette covers is scheduled to be revealed today.
While the Health Ministry prepared this gazette notification in 2012, the Ceylon Tobacco Company filed a petition to prevent its implementation.
The Health Ministry said that the Appeal Court had also issued a verdict saying that the implementation of the gazette notification was legal.
While the CTC filed again a Supreme Court case challenging the gazette notification, the Supreme Court verdict on the petition is due to be revealed today.
Health Minister Maithripala Sirisena stated that the entire nation is waiting to hear the court verdict.
President, the Cabinet and all 225 members of Parliament unanimously approved the gazette notification to cover 80 percent of cigarette packets with pictorial warnings.
