Create systematic methodology to purchase B Onions - President instructs Minister of Trade.-Video
President Mahinda Rajapaksa has directed the Cooperative and Internal Trade Minister to initiate a systematic program to buy local big onion farmers’ produce.
The Agricultural Department has already taken steps to grow big onion in several districts including Moneragala and Hambantota during the off season.
The President directed Cooperative and Internal Trade Minister Johnston Fernando after inspecting a big onion cultivation at Mahasenpura in Tissamaharama today.
The Presidential Media Unit, in a communiqué, stated that the President has instructed authorities to take necessary actions to make the country self-sufficient in big onion.
It also stated that a group of big onion farmers who had a conversation with the President told him about lack of irrigation and sufficient storage facilities.
Later the President instructed the authorities to take action to settle the farmer problems in the area.
