The victory day celebration on Sunday commemorates the freedom of the people of the North – says the Army;Police prevents another celebration opposite the Northern Provincial Council-Video
The police today prevented a ceremony being held opposite the Northern Provincial Council to remember those who had died during the final phase of the humanitarian mission in Wellamulla Waikkal.
The memorial was organized by Northern Provincial Councillor M. K. Sivajilingam and NPC member Anandi Shashidaran was also a part of the ceremony.
Although M. K. Sivajilingam had arrived at the NPC office in Jaffna – Kaithadi region and prepared to hold the memorial ceremony police had not granted permission for it.
Our news team inquired from the chairman of the Northern Provincial Council M. V. K. Sivagnanam whether NPC member M. K. Sivajilingam had obtained permission from the NPC to hold such a memorial service.
In response to our inquiry the NPC chairman stated that NPC member M. K. Sivajilingam had not obtained permission from him or the NPC to hold such a ceremony.
Speaking further he stated that he is against any such ceremony being held opposite any government building.
However, speaking at a press conference held in Colombo Army Media Spokesperson Brigadier Ruwan Wanigasuriya stated that the victory celebration is about defeating terrorism that plagued the country for 30 years and celebrating the true freedom obtained for the public of the North and East.
Army Media Spokesperson Brigadier Ruwan Wanigasuriya also stated that this victory belonged to the entire country.
