Tense situation arises between police and allied health students following arrest of four students-Video
Four students were arrested during the demonstration staged opposite the UGC today, to express their objection against the reduction of the duration of the Allied Health Science Degree programme.
According to our correspondent, a heated argument took place following the arrests between parents of the alleged students and police.
Students and parents of the Allied Health Science Degree programme staged a demonstration opposite the UGC today stating that a discussion was currently underway at the UGC regarding the issue.
Four locations across the island are staging demonstrations which commenced in front of the Peradeniya University, demanding to extend the duration of the course up to four years.
The Inter University Students Federation also joined the demonstration staged by the Allied Health Science Faculty Students Association today.
The demonstrators stated that the police have arrested four students while the demonstration was in progress.
Later, a senior Police officer arrived at the scene and told several parents to come to the Police, to release the students who were held in custody at the Kirulapona Police.
Several students and parents visited the Kirulapona Police where the premises were guarded by the Anti-riot Unit officers.
However, UGC Chairman Kshanika Hirimburegama stated that the issue of Allied Health Science Degree programme cannot be solved by the UGC alone and that a discussion with all four relevant factions was imminent to resolve the issue.
