Message from G. L. To Indian External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj
Sri Lanka has expressed satisfaction that India has appointed Sushma Swaraj as the new Minister of External Affairs in the Indian government.
In a congratulatory message to Swaraj on her appointment as India's Minister of External Affairs, her Sri Lankan counterpart Prof. G.L. Peiris said Sri Lanka is pleased that she has been "entrusted with the important assignment of the Minister of External Affairs at this momentous juncture for both India and our region."
Sri Lanka said Swaraj's association and interest in Sri Lanka is a "source of strength that can add renewed vigour and better understanding to further strengthen traditionally robust friendship" between the two countries.
Welcoming the initiative to associate regional leaders at the inauguration of the new Government in India, Sri Lanka said it is ready to "walk together" with India towards the objective of promotion of greater South Asian solidarity.
Recalling Swaraj's visit to Sri Lanka in April 2012 leading an All Party delegation of the Lok Sabha, Minister Peiris in his message said the visit was milestone in the two countries' relations.
The Sri Lankan Minister expressed confidence that the two countries can "together guide already close and friendly relations between India and Sri Lanka to flourish and grow from strength to strength, and usher in an era of greater partnership between our two countries in regional and global multilateral organizations in particular, SAARC and the United Nations."
