Dengue spreading fast: Entomologist from door to door. Health trade unions request emergency situation.-Video
Steps have now been taken to carry out door to door larval tests as killer dengue is fast spreading in the Western Province.
Central Epidemiological Unit Directress Dr. Paba Palihawadana said a special team of entomologists have been appointed to carry out the tests.
11 thousand 157 dengue cases were reported during the first five months of this year and 33 patients died of the disease.
The significance is that 60% of dengue cases were reported from the Western Province and four thousand patients among them are from Colombo district.
The latest entomological research has found that dengue larvae are bred even in pure water including well water.
Meanwhile instruction has been given to regional health service directors to implement dengue control programs in other vulnerable areas in the island.
Meanwhile steps have been taken to continue dengue checking and control programs in schools as well.
Dr. Palihawadana also said that heads of all government establishments have been instructed to assign a separate officer to handle dengue control activities in each institution.
Meanwhile the Health Trade Unions have requested the Health Ministry to take the current situation into consideration and declare an emergency.
All Ceylon Nursing Officers Association President Gamini Kumarasinghe explained about the trade union proposal.
