Deputy Minister answers regarding assault on police constable at Expressway.-Video
The police states that the investigation into the incident where a police constable was assaulted and his vehicle was set on fire at a rubber plantation close to the Southern Expressway is focusing on whether it is related to revenge against the constable for dispensing his duty.
Three police teams have been appointed to conduct investigations regarding the incident.
The police officer who was assaulted by 4 individuals who arrived in a double cab, is 34 year old Suminda Saman who is part of the Expressway Police Division and he serves at the Kottawa Exchange which is located along the Southern Expressway.
In a statement issued to the police by the constable, he had stated that he had issued a fine to the driver of a deputy minister for violating the Expressway speed limit several days ago.
Elaborating further the police constable had stated that he believes there is a connection between the fine he imposed in the driver in question and the assault on him yesterday.
Police Media Spokesperson SSP Ajith Rohana stated that no connection has been uncovered between the two incidents thus far.

The police constable had imposed a fine on the driver of the Deputy Minister of Consumer and Internal Trade Hemal Gunasekara and the fine was levied at the Kottawa exchange.
Our news team inquired from the Deputy Minister regarding the alleged connection between the incident and in reply the Deputy Minister stated that the fine was levied approximately two weeks ago and that the police officer in question had spoken to his driver in a harsh manner and that he had lodged a complaint regarding the police constable’s behavior.
Elaborating further the Deputy Minister stated that the charge was a bogus one and that he is planning take legal action against the police constable in question.
