Heavy rains expected in many parts of the island; Minor floods in Ratnapura.-Weather
The Meteorology department states that Due to an atmospheric disturbance in the vicinity of Sri Lanka showery weather is expected over most parts of the island and in the sea areas around the island.
Fairly strong winds at times can be expected along the western slopes of the Central hills.
Due to the active cloudiness in the sea areas around the island, the possibility of sudden roughness of the sea areas associated with sudden increase of wind speed is high.
Duty Meteorologist Anusha Warnakulasuriya requested Naval and fishing communities to be vigilant in this regard.
The Directress of Water Resources Division of the Irrigation Department stated that the water levels of Kalu, Ginn, Nilawala and Kelani rivers are rapidly increasing due to showers.
She further requested those living near these rivers to remain vigilant.
Meanwhile, Ratnapura District Disaster Management Centre stated that water level of Kalu Ganga has increased due to heavy showers experienced in Ratnapura District.
Kalutara District Secretary Chandana Jayalal stated that they have taken measures to broaden the river mouth of Kalu Ganga last night, due to the rapid increase of water level.
He further stated that several schools in Matugama, Agalawatta, Walal-laa-wita and Paalinda divisional secretariats have been closed even today, due to transport issues.
