LG institution heads to take responsibility of constructions in Land slide prone areas
Disaster Management Minister Mahinda Amaraweera said all heads of local government institutions who authorize constructions on areas prone to earth slips will have to take responsibility themselves.
The minister speaking to our news team stated that a Circular regarding this has been sent to local government institution heads.
Meanwhile, The National Building Research Institute stated that the disaster warning issued earlier for Kalutara, Galle, Rathnapura, Kegalle and Nuwara Eliya districts has been extended further.
Agalawatta, Palinda Nuwara, Mathugama, Bulathsinhala, Kalutara, Walallawita, Horana and Ingiriya Divisional Secretariat Divisions of the Kalutara district;
Neluwa and Thawalama of Galle district, Kalawana, Elapatha, Eheliyagoda, Nivitigala, Rathnapura and Balangoda Divisional Secretariat Divisions of Rathnapura district,
Yatiyantoda, Deraniyagala, Aranayake, Mawenella and Kegalle Divisional Secretariat Divisions of the Kegalle district are included in this earth slip vulnerable areas.
Ambagamuwa and Nuwara Eliya Divisional Secretariat Divisions of the Nuwara Eliya district are also among areas that currently hold an earth slip warning.
However the UNP stated that they regret the failure of authorities to issue at least a warning signal before the disaster as to mitigate the damage.
Issuing a notice UNP Leadership Council Chairman MP Karu Jayasuriya stated that the value of life and property destroyed in the calamity could not be estimated.
The release also emphasized the Asian Development Bank warning which pointed out that the island’s investment could decline by 4.3 billion US dollars if the country fails to manage her natural disasters by 2016.
However Disaster Management Minister Mahinda Amaraweera said that the tragedy was mitigated in Colombo and Gampaha districts as there was a proper mechanism in place.
Our news team questioned the Minister about the program launched to provide relief assistance to the affected families and the reason behind the heaviest damage being reported from Kalutara district.
