Certain Ruhuna University dons receive death threats; Lecturers association reveal.-Video
The Ruhuna University Teachers Association has condemned the assault on a group of undergraduates of the university.
Lecturers attached to the faculties of Humanities, Social Science, Management and Finance convened a meeting in Colombo today to explain the incident.
Addressing the media, President of the Federation of University Teachers Associations Dr. Chandragupta Thenuwara said his Federation shows protest against Higher Education Minister’s recent name calling which insulted University dons and undergraduates.
A group of residents staged a protest against the decision to cancel the holding of Deyata Kirula exhibition in the Ruhuna University premises on the 2nd of June.
Lecturers said protesters led by thugs assaulted some students during this protest.
Later University administration closed down four faculties including Wellamada Education Unit.
During the media briefing today, Ruhuna University lecturer Dr. Upul Abeyrathna said police gave protection to the thugs while they were unleashing violence.
Federation of University Teachers Associations President Dr. Chandragupta Thenuwara said later that Ruhuna University lecturers have received death threats following the incident.
Meanwhile a protest was held at Galaha Junction in Peradeniya against the closure of four faculties of the Ruhuna University and assaulting its students.
