President Mahinda Rajapaksa opened the newly constructed road to the sacred Somawathiya shrine at 9.00 a.m. today.

The new road has been constructed at a cost of 2.7 billion rupees fulfilling a long felt need of devotees visiting the sacred Somawathiya shrine.

All arrangements have been made to celebrate Hiru Shraddhabhi Vandana Poson program organized by Hiru FM and Hiru TV all day tomorrow at the historical Somawathi Sacred area.

Accordingly several poojas which give priority to spiritual and material aspects will be held beneath the Somawathi Chetiya to mark the introducing of Buddhism to Sri Lanka.

The Hiru Shraddhabhi Vandana program will begin with the commencement of Sil program tomorrow morning and a special pooja will be held for the Somawathi Chetiya where the Buddha’s Tooth Relic is deposited.

In line with the Hiru Shraddhabhi Vandana program, Hiru FM and Hiru TV have organized several dhamma discussions and dhamma sermons throughout the day as well.

Another significance event of the Hiru Shraddhabhi Vandana program is the ordination of a group of novices for the existence of the Buddha Sasana.

On the sidelines of this ceremony, a completed house with all amenities will be offered to the parents of a novice monk who entered Buddha Sasana during a similar ordination ceremony last year.

Later alms giving will be held for one hundred Bhikkus followed by a special Kapruk pooja.

Then the Adhistahna pooja by offering one hundred thousand jasmine flowers for the Somawathi Chetiya will be held tomorrow evening after donating two six foot high stone Buddha statues to the temple.

Hiru FM and Hiru TV invited all the followers to wear white and participate in this grand religious ceremony at Somawathi Chetiya
tomorrow.
