Nuwara Eliya District Secretary D.G.P. Kumarasiri stated the sluice gates of Upper Kotmale, Lakshapana, Norton Bridge and Castlereigh reservoirs have been opened as heavy rain is lashing in the central hills.

He also asked the people living in the low line areas of the Mahaweli and the Kelani river banks to be on alert.

Meanwhile traffic was blocked near Diyagala and Gini-gathhena on the Hatton Nuwara Eliya road after a soil embankment fell on the road.

In an another incident, traffic was disrupted on the Rakwana Deniyaya road after the Black Bridge at Hedarali waththa was submerged while a container was running on it this afternoon.

Police Media Spokesman’s Office informs the users of this road to take Embilipitiya Kolonna road via Udugama instead.

The meteorology department states that there will be showers or thundershowers at times in the Western, Sabaragamuwa and Central provinces and in the Galle and Matara districts.

Duty meteorologist Channa Rodrigo stated that Southwest monsoonal winds may be strengthening at times over the island, especially along the western slopes of central hills.
