The External Affairs Ministry stated in a communiqué that no fuel is imported to Sri Lanka from Iran through a third party.

The government also rejected certain media reports which stated Sri Lanka imported crude oil through Malaysia due to US sanctions on Iran.

However US Embassy in Colombo has assured that Sri Lanka follows the US sanctions on Iran.

Sri Lanka returned an oil tanker believed to be carrying Iran oil to the country last November.

Sapugaskanda Oil Refinery requires 50 thousand barrels of crude oil per day, and it needs Iran oil or another variety similar to Iran crude oil.
