Stock of Red Sandalwood to be sent illegally to Sri Lanka seized in Chennai
In one of its largest seizures, the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence of India confiscated 60 tonnes of red sanders worth 270 Million Indian Rupees from Chennai port in the last three weeks.
Officials said the seizures were made from seven containers which were cleared for export as granite products to the Gulf and Southeast Asian countries including Sri Lanka.
A senior DRI official said about 33 tonnes of red sanders were seized from three containers at the port last week when they were stopped before loading on to a vessel, based on a tip-off.
There has been an increase in red sanders smuggling since December 2013 after the Indian Centre relaxed the norms for its export.
