No hindrance for government to deport Pakistani refugees; Immigration Controller
Immigration Controller Chulananda Perera stated that there is no hindrance for the Sri Lankan government to deport Pakistani refugees who are illegally residing in the country.
A majority of them are from the Ahmaddiya community and there are also a few Christians and Shia Muslims.
Out of them, 142 Pakistanis were reported to be in detention.
The UNHCR has stated that any deportations would be in violation of international law.
Meanwhile, Immigration Controller Chulananda Perera stated that the government had not granted permission to register these immigrants as refugees.
Therefore he stated that there was no such binding and hence Sri Lanka is able to deport them.
