Seed act will not be implemented without agreement; Agri Minister assures.-Video
Agriculture Minister Mahinda Yapa Abeywardana says the protest march and demonstration held in front of his ministry today was to please a few companies.
The National Movement to protect seed ownership marched from Battaramulla junction to Agriculture Ministry and held a protest demanding the annulment of the proposed Seed Act.
A tense situation erupted between protesters and police as protesters attempted to hand over a petition to the minister.
Our correspondent stated that riot police waited ready on riot vehicles with water cannon inside the ministry premises.
Later a few protesters were allowed to enter the ministry premise in order to hand over a petition.
Meanwhile Coordinator of the National Movement to Protect Seed Ownership and Environmentalist Ravindra Kariyawasam said the proposed Seed Act includes clauses to punish farmers who possess, distribute and cultivate seeds without certification.
However Minister Mahinda Yapa Abeywardana told a news conference this afternoon that the proposed Act would not implemented without the agreement of all factions.
