Reports reaching our news team stated 12 midwives who reported for duty last night have been locked inside the labor room of Ragama Teaching Hospital.

When contacted the hospital deputy director A.R.M. Raufeek told our news team the nursing officers had pad-locked the labor room from outside.

He also said nursing officers have informed the midwives that they would not be allowed to go free until they agree to sign in the attendance register that comes under the nurses’ supervision.

The Ragama Hospital Director General has been summoned for an emergency meeting at the Health Ministry to discuss the prevailing situation.

Meanwhile Midwives continue their trade union action by refraining from field duties for the second day today.

A special discussion between the Health Minister and the Family Health Workers Association to settle this dispute will be held this afternoon.

Family Health Workers Association President Devika Kodituwakku said that the association will decide whether to continue the trade union action on the outcome of the proposed meeting this afternoon.
