EAM notifies to look into the alleged boat that was in distress with SL asylum seekers.
A boat carrying 152 Sri Lankan Tamil asylum-seekers bound for Australia is reportedly in trouble at sea off a remote Australian island after it left India.
Reportedly, the boat, with illegal migrants including women and children, was 300 km west of Christmas Island when it suffered an oil leak.
According to Press trust of India a man on the boat called Duke has said that the vessel is in trouble about 250 kilometers off Christmas Island.
He has said that there are 32 women, and 37 children among the 152 illegal migrants on board the boat.
The man has said the vessel was being buffeted by wild weather and needed assistance.
External Affairs Ministry has also notified the Australian High Commission to inquire about the matter.
Meanwhile, Australia’s Immigration Minister Scott Morrison today insisted there was no at-sea emergency concerning a boatload of asylum seekers coming from southern India, a stance refugee advocates called “cavalier and dismissive”.
