The Lectures and administrative activities of Rajarata University have been crippled due to the trade union actions taken by the University Teachers Association.

The majority of 150 teachers did not report for duty today, and students also did not attend the lectures when the university was reopened today after its closure on last Friday.

University teachers stated yesterday that they would refrain from teaching and administrative duties with effect from today.

They have taken this decision following the Vice Chancellor and a group of teachers were held by students inside the main administrative building for several hours on last Thursday demanding the removal of class suspension on a group of students.

Rajarata University Teachers Association Secretary Senior Lecturer Venerable Ulagan Watte Chandrasiri Thera said the lives of teachers are now at risk, therefore the trade union actions will continue until a conducive environment is created for the teachers to engage in teaching activities freely.

Meanwhile University Students Federation requested the teachers to report for duty and start lectures.

Rajarata University Students Federation President Dinesh Kumara further described their plea to university teachers.

However Rajarata University Teachers Association Secretary Senior Lecturer Venerable Ulagan Watte Chandrasiri Thera said a decision will be taken after discussing the students’ request.
