Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Jayalalithaa Jayaram stated that a strong diplomatic measure should be taken to release Indian fishermen arrested in Sri Lanka.

She requested that the issue of the Indo-Lanka international maritime boundary Line be considered as an unresolved problem.

According to the Chief Minister, the Kachchativu Islet, which was ceded to Sri Lanka through special agreements signed in 1974 and 1976, is a subject matter of litigation at the Indian Supreme Court.

She further states that Sri Lanka’s northern sea belt which is currently invaded by Indian fishermen has been a traditional fishing ground for Indian fishermen.
