The Kali Amman Kovil of Monneswaram has filed a petition at the Supreme Court with a proposal to perform animal sacrifices under an annual slaughter permit.
The petition has challenged the Appeal Court verdict given last year with regard to animal sacrifices near religious places.
The Appeal Court considered a petition filed last year by 13 anti animal harassment organizations including the National Bhikku Council against the annual animal sacrifices at Munneswaram Kovil in Chilaw.
Later the Appeal Court ordered that it was mandatory to obtain a license if animal sacrifices are held near places of religious worship.
The petition filed by Kali Amman Kovil which challenged the Appeal Court order was considered today by a bench of three Supreme Court Judges including the Chief Justice.
The Supreme Court adjourned the hearing till the 21st of this month for other parties to make their submissions over the petitioner’s proposals.
