Teacher unions demand that the Education Ministry decision to make Mathematic subject non-compulsory to study for GCE Advanced Level examination should be withdrawn immediately.

Addressing a ceremony in Matara recently Education Minister Bandula Gunawardana said the government has decided to change the regulations which barred students to study GCE Advanced Level without passing Mathematics.

During a media briefing held in Colombo this afternoon, Lanka Teacher Services Association General Secretary Mahinda Jayasinghe raised objections towards the government decision.

Students who secure a minimum simple pass for Mathematics at the GCE O/L are currently qualified to study for the Advanced Level.
