The Ministry of External Affairs summons US ambassador
The American Ambassador to Sri Lanka Michele J. Sison has been summoned to the External Affairs ministry.
The US Ambassador has been summoned in order to enquire about the decision to provide funds for local NGOs to educate Sri Lankan citizens on elections and voter rights.
Certain reports stated that 1.9 billion rupees have been allocated under the American International Aid program for this awareness program in Sri Lanka.
Local NGOs have been educated through the US Embassy in Colombo to apply for these funds.
A senior government minister told our news team that the matter was also criticized when it was raised during the Cabinet meeting yesterday, and later it decided to inform government objection towards the US awareness program.
Meanwhile External Affairs Ministry spokesman said that the US Ambassador was called today to show objection to the program.
