The two surveillance boats provided by the Australian government to enable authorities to prevent human trafficking were officially handed over to Sri Lankan government today.

The ceremony to hand over the boats was held with the patronage of President Mahinda Rajapaksa at the Colombo Harbor premises and Australian Immigration and Emigration Minister Scot Morrison also participated.

Australia offered two surveillance boats named Bay-Boat to Sri Lanka in appreciation of Sri Lanka Navy’s operations to prevent illegal boat people to Australia for the last five years.

Navy Media Spokesman Commander Kosala Warnakulasuriya said Navy would do necessary modification to this 38 meter long vessel with modern facilities.

He further said Navy has dubbed the two boasts as Mihikata and Rathnadeepa.
