31 Rajarata University students charged for holding their Vice Chancellor and several teachers hostage were granted bail today but were remanded again as they failed to meet bail conditions

The Magistrate ordered the release of the students on personal bails amounting to 200 thousand rupees each and noted that the bail sureties should be close relatives.

She also ordered the students to submit Grama Niladari certificates to prove the relationship between the suspects and their relatives.

Our correspondent stated that Anuradhapura Magistrate Yuresha de Silva ordered that the students be remanded again as the bail conditions were not met.

Earlier Mihintale OIC Rukmal Rathnayake requested the court not to release the students.

The lawyer appeared for the Vice Chancellor and university teachers told the court a group of students have already deserted the university in fear of unruly behavior of the student activists.

She told the court that the vice chancellor and his staff are still scared of their lives.

A group of Rajarata University students kept the Vice Chancellor and several teachers by force demanding the removal of class suspension on a group of fellow students.
