Making a special statement to our news team, Election Commissioner Mahinda Deshapriya said arrangements have been made to hold the Uva Provincial Council election at any time.

Uva Provincial Governor C. Nanda Mathew said the Uva Provincial Council would be dissolved tonight.

He said he received the respective letter from Chief Minister Shashindra Rajapaksa this morning to dissolve the Provincial Council.

Accordingly, he said he instructed the government printer this morning to issue the respective gazette notification to dissolve the Provincial Council.

Meanwhile, the Election Commissioner will call for nominations next week and the election will be held under the 2013 voter registration list in late September.

600 thousand 966 voters from the Badulla district and 332 thousand 764 voters from the Moneragala districts are qualified to vote in the forthcoming election.

32 members will be elected to the Uva Provincial Council and it has two bonus seats as well.

Meanwhile a discussion between political party representatives and Election Commissioner Mahinda Deshapriya was held at the latter’s office this morning.

JVP Western Provincial Councilor Sunil Watagala said participants discussed the relocation of member seats of the two districts.

Meanwhile the Election Commissioner has requested political parties not to give nominations to those who destroy the environment, criminals and offenders who have received suspended jail terms.

Uva PC to be dissolved tonight


Uva Provincial Governor C. Nanda Mathew says the Uva Provincial Council will be dissolved this midnight.

When our news team contacted the Governor said he received the respective letter from Chief Minister Shachindra Rajapaksa this morning to dissolve the Provincial Council.

Accordingly, he said he instructed the government printer this morning to issue the respective gazette notification to dissolve the Provincial Council.

The official tenure of the Uva Provincial will expire next September.

Meanwhile, since he receives a copy of this gazette, the Election Commissioner will announce the dates of nominations through a gazette notification within a week.

Accordingly the forthcoming Uva Provincial Council election will be held under the 2013 voter registration list and it is likely to be held next September.

Meanwhile a discussion between political party representatives and Election Commissioner Mahinda Deshapriya was held at the latter’s office this morning.

The election commissioner expected to officially announce the number of member seats allocated for the Badulla and the Moneragala districts during the discussion this morning.

However Uva Provincial Council election has been under public discussion for some time.
