Conditions on which Indian fishermen are released, to be re-evaluated
The attention of the Ministry of Fisheries has been drawn towards adopting similar conditions as imposed by India when releasing Sri Lankan fishermen, with regard to the release of Indian fishermen.
Judicial magistrate court at Kakinada in Andhra Pradesh imposed a fine of 1.5 million Indian Rupees on 41 Sri Lankan fishermen and eight boats while ordering their release.
The court imposed a fine of 25,000 rupees each on 41 fishermen and 60,000 rupees each on eight trawlers.
A Fishermen’s association in India stated that however, this approach was not conducive as they would be faced with a terrible situation in case the Sri Lankan courts imposed a similar fine on Indian fishermen.
Secretary to the Ministry of Fisheries Dr D M R B Dissanayake stated that conditions with regard to the release of Indian fishermen will be sent to the Attorney General’s department.
