President Mahinda Rajapaksa yesterday opened the Arcade Independence Square Shopping Complex, which comes under the second phase of the Independence Square Development Project in Colombo.
The mega development project is in line with the Colombo City Development Plan aiming to convert Colombo into a clean, green, and people friendly city.
The project is in keeping with the Mahinda Chinthana Vision for the Future program to beautify the Colombo City.
Accordingly, the area occupied by several old buildings earlier such as the Auditor General’s Department, an Urban Development Authority office and the Government Analyst’s Department were renovated and converted in to a modern, state of art shopping complex.
An area of over 90 thousand square feet has been renovated and converted into an eye-catching complex.
The Arcade Independence Square Shopping Complex has been built at a cost of 550 million rupees under the Colombo City Development Plan, carried out by the UDA under the guidance of Defence and Urban Development Ministry Secretary Gotabhaya Rajapaksa.
Colombo District MP R. Dumindha Silva and many other Ministers and MPs participated in the opening ceremony.
