The Petroleum Corporation has decided to return 35 thousand metric tons of furnace oil imported for the Ceylon Electricity Board.

Petroleum Unions pointed out that it is beyond belief to reject this new stock while the local market is experiencing a furnace oil shortage.

The furnace oil tanker reached the country last Friday and it was anchored in the sea off Uswetakeiyawa.

When our news team contacted Petroleum Corporation Managing Director Susantha de Silva said unloading of the stock has been halted due a financial dispute with the shipping company.

However Petroleum Corporation Acting Chairman S. Amarasekera said laboratory tests found the imported oil is of substandard quality and that was another reason not to unload the stock.

He also said that diesel will be supplied to the CEB instead of furnace oil until the next furnace oil tanker reach the island on the 29th of this month.

The pumping of crude oil to Sapugaskanda Refinery re-started after the burst on the hose of the pipeline was repaired yesterday.

Amarasekera also said several crude oil tankers have been docked in off shore but the pumping process is slow as one hose is available for the pumping.
