Chief Justice Mohan Peries informed the parties who involved in the dispute of Haj Pilgrims quotas to settle the matter amicably.

The Serendib Haj and Umra Association last Friday filed a fundamental case against the Haj Pilgrims Committee and charged the Committee has distributed the quotas in a biased manner.

The case was taken before a panel of three Supreme Court Judges this morning.

Later the court issued an injunction over the quota distribution, and the order has been extended up to the 23rd of this month.

The Saudi Arabian government grants Haj quotas to several countries, and Sri Lanka has received quotas for 2240 persons this year.

The Haj Pilgrims Committee of the Religious Affairs Ministry is presided by Senior Minister A.H.M. Fowzie, and its co-President is Deputy Minister Abdul Cader.

This committee is responsible for the distribution of the quota among 90 agents.

Cases were filed in 2006, 2012 and 2013 as well, charging the quotas were not distributed properly but later the cases were settled amicably.

However, after the Supreme Court order, Deputy Minister Abdul Cader stated today he is ready to settle the dispute in the event Minister Fowzie agrees to do so.

Serendib Haj and Umra Association President M.S.H. Mohammad also said Minister Fowzie has behaved arbitrarily in distributing Haj quotas.
