The Ceylon Electricity Board stated the prevailing shortage of furnace oil has not disrupted electricity generation.

The operations of Sapugaskanda Refinery have not started yet and Petroleum authorities returned two oil tankers as their stocks did not comply with the required standard.

Accordingly Petroleum Corporation decided to return 35 thousand metric tons of furnace oil to its country of origin, United Arab Emirates.

Consequently there is a furnace oil shortage prevailing in the local market.

However Petroleum Corporation Acting Chairman S. Amarasekera said diesel will be supplied to the CEB instead of furnace oil until the next furnace oil tanker reaches the island on the 29th of this month.

He also said supplying furnace oil to the standards of the CEB, created problems during the last six months.

However CEB Chairman W.B. Ganegala says the Board has to incur high costs when diesel or naphtha is used to produce electricity.
