Botanical Garden and Public Recreation Ministry Secretary Dr. Willie Gamage said a 2-foot long white cobra of Dehiwala Zoo suspected to be stolen to fulfill a vow.

The Dehiwala Zoo has around 10 white cobras, and three out of them have been put for exhibition.

However the Ministry Secretary said the stolen white cobra was not among the exhibits.

An unknown visitor has recently enquired from one of the caretakers of the cobras whether he could buy one snake.

A senior officer of the Dehiwala police said investigations revealed the particular caretaker was absent in office when the theft was reported yesterday.

Botanical Garden and Public Recreation Ministry Secretary Dr. Willie Gamage said he suspects a caretaker is involved in the white cobra theft.

Zoologists state white cobras are born due to genetic disorders therefore there is no monetary value in such cobras.
